The Dutch government is executing the largest cuts ever in the cultural sector. Many things that have been built and developed in our society on cultural level is being dismantled and destroyed. With the argument of the global financial crisis backing up their policy of cultural destruction.
Without any interest in what culture (music, theatre, visual and performing arts) mean for the good of the people and without regard for the place it has in society and with a focus on the economy, on money and growth, our culture is not slowly but rapidly destructed. In protests artists have shown that they do not accept being the outcasts of society because ‘their work does not contribute to a stronger economy’.
The Netherlands will because of the policy of this right wing anti cultural and stupid government lose some of its gems like the Metropole Orchestra and many other important groups in the performing arts. The Metropole Orchestra performs with know Dutch singers in protest. Their video is widely spread over the internet in support of the arts and against the policy of this government. Enjoy what music does and join in protest by spreading this video as a viral.

Daaruit zijn voortgekomen Breast Cancer Research Foundation maar ook Pink Ribbon International. Beide staan geheel los van elkaar en claimen het eerstgeboorterecht. Gegeven de bovenstaande roze lintjes kolder is het dan toch misschien verstandiger om gewoon te doneren aan het Koningin Wilhelmina Fonds. En kanker te bestrijden middels het ook door hun gefinancierde onderzoek en dat dan los van de vraag of die kanker zich in borst, prostaat, long, huid of waar dan ook bevindt. Dat immers maakt voor het slachtoffer niet uit en is alleen van belang voor de toebedeling van onderzoeksgeld aan de verschillende onderzoeksinstellingen.
Kortom: opheffen die Pink Ribbon flauwekul, de aasgieren van bedrijven die er een slaatje uit slaan boycotten en geld geven aan een club waarvan we weten dat het goed terecht komt. Voor mij in ieder geval geen make up van Estee Lauder meer.

16 November 2011Stichting Pink Ribbon, a Dutch foundation started in 2003 copying the USA originated Pink Ribbon concept and monopolising Pink Ribbon in the Netherlands has only spend 1.8 % of its donation revenues on research.
As a comparison; Pink Ribbon International labels a minimum of 90% of its income for accredited breast cancer research projects.
Stichting Pink Ribbon is not associated to Pink Ribbon International and has used all legal means to ban Pink Ribbon International from Dutch territory.
With the sale of ribbons, magazines (supported by publisher Sanoma) and gala events (supported by Estee Lauder) Stichting Pink Ribbon raised an amount over 21 million USD from private donations. Only 390.00 USD had been spend on breast cancer research according to a thorough investigation by the Dutch television (NOS).
In 2009 en 2010 no funds at all were labelled for breast cancer research.
Stichting Pink Ribbon has been criticized because of its focus on marketing, and celebrities ignoring the reality of cancer and the necessity and responsibility to act accordingly.
Two major Dutch cancer organisations, KWF Kankerbestrijding and A Sisters Hope have terminated their partnership with Stichting Pink Ribbon.
We staan er weer eens mooi op internationaal. Nu hoop ik maar dat de koppen bij de frauduleuze Nederlandse Pink Ribbon sneller rollen dan de wielen van de raceauto van de winnaar van de formule 1. Ik hoop dat er in Nederland geen plaats is voor mensen die op de wijze van de lieden achter Pink Ribbon Nederland zo scandaleus aan zelfverrijking doen. Mensen die bij die organisatie hun boterham verdienen. Bestuursleden die de kluit belazeren over de ruggen van al die mensen die getroffen zijn door die afgrijselijke ziekte borstkanker.
En ik hoop dat de Nederlanders deze club massaal de rug toe keren en ieder geval NOOIT meer make-up kopen van Estée Lauder, stofzuigers met een roze kastje, roze telefoons en bladen van Sanoma. Een ouderwetse boycot van die producenten en Pink Ribbon Nederland is bepaald op zijn plaats wat mij betreft.
Wel jammer voor al die vrouwen met de Pink Ribbon telefoontjes om nu te moeten bellen met een telefoontje dat in de markt gezet is door een stelletje asocialen. Want dat zijn ze daar bij de bestuurders van Pink Ribbon Nederland.

UPDATE: According to my friend and colleague of Bhutan News Service Vidhyapati Mishra who is monitoring the situation in the Beldangi II camp 10 out of 15 hunger strikers have fallen ill. AMDA doctors were present to examine them and a government official (assistant Chief District Officer of the Jhapa District) visited the hunger strikers yesterday urging them to end the strike and stating the government was not given an ultimatum to correct the registration problem. As this is the second time a hunger strike is happening after a full year without progress this last statement is doubtful to say the least. As the living conditions in the refugee camps are not good and the general health situation is problematic it is obvious that this hunger strike has a high risk and urgent action is needed. Further decline of the medical situation of the hunger strikers is imminent.

Today I spoke to one of my Bhutanese friends who I met while filming. Het told me the latest news from the Beldangi II refugee camp in Nepal which is so familiar to me. And I was shocked.
Today there was a demonstration with a hungerstrike in my hometown The Hague. By Tibetan refugees protesting against the atrocities of the Chinese occupying power in their homeland Tibet. And out of solidarity with the suicides attempts by self-burning that a long list of Tibetan monks and nuns do. A tragedy that gains international media attention easily.
So today this Bhutanese friend told me about fifteen Bhutanese women in the Beldangi II camp who started a hungerstrike till death the yesterday because they are not registered by the Nepalese government as refugees. Not having such a status means no support like the other Bhutanese refugees get, no health care, no education for their children, no food, no opportunity to resettle to another country, no life…

This group of fifteen brave women in the Beldangi camp do not get international attention. They have no cameras registering teir ordeal and no means of spreading their story globally. They are not seen and not heard. As if they don’t exist from an international perspective. They are stateless, powerless and without rights. Their situation offends me as a human being, as a sister. It’s important that the world gets to know the downside of the resettlement program that the international community is executing through the UNHCR and a number of countries who, like my own, invite Bhutanese refugees to come over and build a new life, a new future. For humanitarian reasons. The fifteen women from Beldangi do not have a refugee status and there are a number of reasons possible why that is so. One of them is that they might very well have arrived as a refugee in the refugee-camp they live in too late. Because once the resettlement program from the UNHCR started in 2007 they blocked the entry of newly arrived refugees in the camps. Resettling exiles is done with the condition that there will be no more influx of refugees in the camps.
The registration of refugees in the camps is a debatable issue. Because of identity and resettlement fraud the criteria for receiving a refugeestatus in the camps has become more complicated and strict. Unclarity of ones past situation and family relations now means that one might not get such status, with the above consequences. The worst one being the fact that one in essence is told not to exist. To be stateless while not being a refugee and because of that having even less rights than a refugee.
From a more fundamental perspective it is this policy that degrades people to a less than human level. With no rights to housing, education, health care, food, work and basically without a right to exist. This in essence is a gross human rights tragedy and a gross violation of the most basic human rights. Currently UNHCR holds a large number of files of refugees whose identity is either not completely clear or for a number of other reasons. As long as these files are held by the UNHCR and not transferred to the IOM (International Organization for Migration) these files will not be processed further and thereby the resettling of these people is halted. And as stated people without refugee status are denied the rights other refugees have making life almost unbearable. For sometimes very unclear reasons the verification of ones refugee status sometimes takes an extremely long time at the UNHCR resulting in major problems for the ones it concerns. This includes effectively halting the resettlement of some who have opted for resettlement for unclear reasons and preventing others to opt for resettlement because they’ve not been granted refugee status rendering resettlement impossible.
I can and will not except that reality for a fact. I challenge the policymakers, the politicians, the international community to end this inhumane policy. As a citizen of this earth I urge the world to open the eyes and set itself behind those women, to tell their stories, to support them and to save them. Because they have every right for an acceptable quality of life, just like anyone else, just like you and me. Because they are just like you and me human beings.
If you feel that this situation should end, please write a letter or an email in support of these women to your member of parliament, government or Nepal ambassador or consul. To seek justice for these women.

doe mij een plezier en lees eerst het persbericht van HRW hier onder en liefst ook het rapport dat ze geschreven hebben. Het gaat over wat mij en velen met mij dagelijks treft. Over hoe mijn en onze mensenrechten structureel geschonden worden door de Nederlandse overheid.
En lees daarna het onderstaande over hoe de media dit oppakken…

En dan nu over hoe sommige media, in dit geval het Parool zonder na te denken stigmatiseert en schoffeert door zelfs zoiets als een fotokeuze. Gelukkig zijn er ook andere kwalitatief sterkere media en hopelijk zullen die beter berichten over dit zo belangrijke rapport.
Vandaag om 10u was het embargo afgelopen. Het embargo op het rapport van Human Rights Watch over het feit dat de Nederlandse Staat de mensenrechten schendt van transgenders. Eindelijk heeft een internationale mensenrechten organisatie na gedegen onderzoek een duidelijk rapport geschreven en gepubliceerd. Dat wil zeggen, vrij gegeven aan de media. Het rapport wordt overmorgen gepresenteerd in Nederland.
In het kort is de strekking dat de sterilisatieeis die de Nederlandse wetgever stelt bij geslachtsverandering om ook de juridische wijziging door te voeren, zodat mensen als ik een paspoort krijgen dat (beter) klopt, tegen het internationale menserechtenverdrag indruist. De werkelijkheid is overigens nog ingewikkelder maar daar gaat het in dit stukje niet over. Scharrel daarvoor gerust over mijn site of lees het rapport dat een heel degelijk stuk werk is.
Echter, de Nederlandse media zouden de Nederlandse media niet zijn als ze, op een witte raaf na, niet bij zo ongeveer de eerste melding over een rapport als dit volledig op hun bek zouden gaan. Het adagium dat transgenders freaks zijn, travestieten die rondspringen tijdens de gay pride en niet heel gewone mensen die een persoonlijk drama hebben overleefd en daarvoor een drastische ingreep in hun leven hebben moeten doen, wordt onderstreept. Neem het Parool, toch een doorgaans gerespecteerde krant met in ieder geval enige kwaliteit. Toch? Nou, niet dus. De stupiditeit bij de redactie druipt er weer eens vanaf en dus wordt er een stigmatiserende foto uitgezocht en geplaatst waarmee het hele onderwerp down de drain gaat. Bedankt Parool! Dat hebben jullie dus weer eens goed verkloot in nog geen uur na de pers release van HRW. Knap hoor. Het stelletje minkukels op de Amsterdamse Parool redactie plaats natuurlijk een travestieten foto die geen enkele maar dan ook geen enkele relatie tot het onderwerp heeft opvallend bij het overigens slecht geschreven artikeltje. Het rapport is niet gelezen en de tekst is een overname van de ANP tekst. Journalistiek bestaat tegenwoordig uit rechtstreeks overnemen van ANP teksten, het toevoegen van een foute foto en het neerplempen van het resultaat in krant en op de website. Mijn God wat een journalistieke kloothommels. Overigens wordt een prima uitspraak aan Boris Dittrich toegewezen terwijl de uitspraak van de enige echte transgender activist in Nederland afkomstig is en dat in het rapport ook staat aangegeven. Maar ja, dat weet je als journalist natuurlijk pas als je het rapport ook echt leest en dat is ongetwijfeld teveel werk voor het Parool journaille.

The Headwind project (formerly and by some still known as the Atma Project) is flying. Like a breeze! A year ago I started working on the greatest project in my life. At least, that’s what it turns out to be. In July 2010 my mom died and I realized that there is not much in this world that I really value apart from the love of and for my children and my friends. I decided to spend at least the coming years in my life for a cause that I could believe in and that, albeit maybe only to a small extend, be beneficial for others. Preferably for people with less chances in life.
I searched for a place on the glove that kind of triggered my emotions. That turned out to be Nepal.
I researched and re-searched to find out what the problems of that country were and by some coincidence I got to know someone who came from there. Than ten years ago as a Bhutanese with political asylum in my country. Actually, in my town. We started talking and we became friends. The Headwind project was born.
It’s now a year later and I’ve been to Nepal. Not as tourist (although I did take some vacation there after the work was done), but as a writer and more important as a beginning filmmaker. The idea for the documentary film Headwind slowly grew into a story and a collection of writings, photo’s and video footage. I visited refugee camps and decide to focus on the largest one, the Beldangi camp. I visited the burned Goldhap camp after the fire to find out I was probable the first filmed from the west entering that godforsaken place to film, make photo’s and talk to the people. It was by far the most emotional day in my five month stay in Nepal this year. I lack words to describe what my eyes and cameras have seen there. That visit changed my life.
I’m ‘home’ again but that home is, as I explained earlier always incomplete now that there is another home in Nepal. I’ve been looking at thousands of photo’s in the past few days to select only 50 of them together with Eveline who had joined me in February and whose heart beats for this projects in the rhythm as mine. It was a frustrating job to select only fifty and to deselect nearly 7000 photo’s. Actually it hurts to not select some of the best photos I ever made for the upcoming photo exhibition. But now we have our 50 best. All of them with a story to tell. All of them great and some of them with a strength in them that is indescribable.
So Headwind is now going to the next stage. After finishing the novel that is to be published later this year in Kathmandu in Nepal to be able to get it to the Bhutanese community globally at a fair (that is non European) book price and after the Nepalese filming, Headwind is ramping up for the photo exhibition and the Dutch filming that will take place in the coming weeks. That filming will be done end of September except for the timing of the family I met in Beldangi on Schiphol Airport and their first days in this for them so strange land. I already started rough cutting the Nepal part of the film and the work on a simple trailer. A composer and singer are making the title song and working on a soundtrack. All kinds of things are happening and it all amazes me.
It’s an out of this world experience (almost literally) to see how slowly but gradually the pieces of the Headwind puzzle are coming together. It’s great to see how good the material is that we already have but it is even greater to experience the enormous mental support from the Bhutanese community in exile. For everyone who wants to be touched by this (even if only slightly) the first thing to see in the Netherlands is the photo exhibition that will run in Creatief Warenhuis HOOP at the Grote Markt 10 in The Hague. It run’s from September 1 until September 18 on the wednesdays to sundays in the afternoons. We have the whole first floor for fifty great photo’s. Please, please, come and see the work. Witness some of the editing of Headwind taking place live or listen to excerpts from the novel and music from the region. And on September 1st, join in at the vernissage, the opening party, at HOOP. We start at 7 pm. Doors of the exhibition open at 4pm. Don’t miss it! This fall WoordenStorm Publications will publish the novel ’Headwind Laxmi’s Story’ by Alice Verheij. The novel is written in English to be able to distribute it in the Bhutanese and Nepalese communities globally. There will also be an edition published in Nepal for south Asia and global distribution.
About the story.
‘Headwind, Laxmi’s Story’ is a beautifully crafted and compelling novel about a young girl who was born in exile, resettled to the Netherlands and had to fight for both her place in society as her independence from her own society.
Laxmi, who names herself Cindy now was born in a Bhutanese family in a refugee-camp in Nepal. At a very young age she learns about the dangers in the camps as she is attacked and raped violently. But she also befriended Jigme, a Dalit (low caste) boy as a child and there friendship becomes more intimate over the years and grows to real love.
In 2008 Laxmi’s parents opt for resettlement, so Laxmi and Jigme have to part. Indefinitely. The life in her new homeland is difficult. But Shreeni learns to adjust. She is even able to find a job and after a few years she actually starts her own flower shop. But the cost is high as she has to break with her family not being able to feel part of their strict Hindu culture anymore. After a terrible row she finally takes her life in her own hands.
Then, a few years later she gets an invitation from her uncle who now lives in Chicago to come to his house for a holiday. She decides to go not knowing that her life will take a decisive turn.
Headwind, Laxmi’s Story is both a novel that is critical about the situation of the exiles form Bhutan as a great love story.
Alice Verheij is a Dutch writer who started writing at a later age. After a theatre play in 2007 and a few yet unpublished novels she had her first novel published in 2010. She prefers to write about social and cultural issues in present day using the novel as a form to let people understand the challenges of the characters in her books.
Since 2010 she is involved with the exiles from Bhutan who had to leave their country as a result of horrific discrimination and ethnic cleansing in the early nineties of the last century. Until this day these people face many challenges and disregard for their situation by the international community.
‘Headwind, Laxmi’s Story’ is the third part of the Headwind cross media project focussing on the situation of the Bhutanese exiles and refugees. In 2012 the feature length documentary, titled ‘Headwind’, will be released at the international documentary and human rights focussed film festivals.
The novel has been written in the summer of 2011 in between the shootings for the documentary in Nepal. Thereby the author has been able to capture the specific nature of the life of a young refugee girl, living in a camp in the Terai region in the subtropic southeast of Nepal. Having visited the camps many times the author’s descriptions of these camps and the live within are as close to reality as possible. This novel not only tells the tale of an original love story but also gives an inside look at the lives of the exiled Bhutanese. By that it is an unique work worth reading. Zo, en toen was mijn eerste foto expositie onderweg.
Dat wil zeggen, later deze maand en begin volgende maand heb ik de beschikking over de expositieruimte in Creatief Warenhuis Hoop in Den Haag. Zo ongeveer de coolste plek in deze stad. In het centrum en gemakkelijk bereikbaar.
De expositie zal een selectie van foto’s laten zien over Bhutaanse vluchtelingen in de kampen in Nepal en maakt deel uit van het cross media project ‘Headwind’. Na de website, de inmiddels bijna drukklare roman en de feature lengte documentaire waar hard aan gewerkt wordt is dit het vierde onderdeel van het Headwind project.
Meer info volgt hier binnenkort dus maak alvast ruimte in de agenda voor een bezoek aan Creatief Warenhuis Hoop eind augustus of begin september (ook open tijdens de museumnacht). Ik zal er zijn en uitleg geven over de foto’s en zorgen voor een aanvullend programma van korte lezingen en muziek rond het thema van de vergeten vluchtelingen uit Bhutan. Afgelopen dinsdag heeft zich in het Zuid-Oosten van Nepal een tweetal rampen voltrokken. In twee van de zeven vluchtelingenkampen waar sinds begin jaren negentig duizenden vluchtelinge uit Bhutan leven onder primitieve omstandigheden zijn branden uitgebroken. De gevolgen zijn desastreus.
In het Goldhap kamp dat in 2008 al getroffen werd door een grote brand zijn 570 van 600 hutten verbrand, op de school na alle voorzieningen verwoest en ongeveer 3500 vluchtelingen dakloos geworden. De Nepalese regering, UNHCR, Caritas, Lutheraanse Wereld Federatie, Nepalees Rode Kruis en anderen doen alles wat mogelijk is om deze mensen te helpen te overleven en herhuisvesten.
Ook het Sanishare kamp is op de dezelfde dag getroffen door een brand en grotendeels verwoest. In Sanishare zijn zo’n 1200 van de 12.500 vluchtelingen nu dakloos. Sanishare was het kamp dat de vluchtelingen die vooralsnog niet resettlen zouden bewonen na 2012 in semi permanente bewoning. Ook in Sanishare zijn duizenden mensen dakloos geworden.
Op dit moment is via www.bhutannewsservice.com er berichtgeving over deze branden, de gevolgen en de hulpverlening. Steeds meer informatie druppelt binnen waardoor de omvang van de rampen zichtbaar wordt. Vooralsnog is er niet veel bekend over eventuele slachtoffers. Voor wat betreft hulp is er van alles nodig. Er is geen huisvesting en onvoldoende voedsel voor de 5000 slachtoffers. De regering van Nepal en hulporganisaties ter plekke doen wat ze kunnen net als de bevolking van de omliggende dorpen. De schaarse bezittingen die de slachtoffers hadden zijn ze kwijt geraakt en de nood is medisch en psychisch groot.
De komende dagen zal ik proberen een hulpactie op touw te zetten om geld in te zamelen voor noodhulp, daarnaast zal ik proberen om op korte termijn af te reizen naar Nepal om ter plekke de gevolgen in beeld te brengen maar ook waar mogelijk noodhulp te brengen. Alle steun hierbij is meer dan welkom en ik roep iedereen die ik ken op om mij te helpen om een actie op te zetten voor deze dubbel getroffen medemensen.
Mijn gedachten zijn bij de slachtoffers van deze branden.

Morgenavond is er weer de Pink Pearls party op Strand West georganiseerd door een goede vriendin van me.
Annelies Hintjes heeft er alles aan gedaan om op Strand West in Amsterdam weer leuke vrouwenfeesten te organiseren.
Mocht je zin in een leuk feestje hebben en vrouw zijn (cis of transvrouw) dan ben je hartstikke welkom en kun je me daar treffen. Het schijnt dat je er zelfs mijn boek kunt kopen. Voor de twijfelaars: het is niet verplicht gay te zijn.
